11/8: Second Annual Ida B. Wells Lecture, 7 p.m., Francis Auditorium. Featuring speaker Dr. Paula Giddings, the Elizabeth A. Woodson Professor Emerita of Africana Studies at Smith College. Dr. Giddings is a leading scholar on social justice, race, anti-racism, and Black feminism. She is the author of Ida, A Sword Among Lions: Ida B. Wells and the Campaign Against Lynching. Her lecture will center on Ida B. Wells and her resistance strategies within a larger conversation about the politics of race and gender in America.

Until mid-November: Cans Across the Conference food drive: a competition among USA South schools to benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Bring donations to a contest or the Physical Activities Center, or give to any student-athlete to help their team’s total donations.

11/16: Humphreys Lecture in Biology, 7 p.m., Francis Auditorium. Featuring speaker Dr. Camellia Moses Okpodu, a plant biochemist and professor of biology at the University of Wyoming. This year, she was named one of the top 10 Black biologists over the last 30 years by Academic Influence. The title for her presentation is “Using a Systems Approach to Exploring the Effects of Climate and Environmental Stress in Plants — From Genomics to Outreach.”

11/29: Last day to donate to the annual Black Baby Doll Drive and Black Boys Read Book Drive for local children. 

• Donors can give dolls to members of the Ida. B. Wells Living Learning Community, or write a check payable to 91TV, with Black Baby Doll Drive written in the memo. Dolls must have natural hair; be fully clothed; have no piercings, makeup or tattoos; and have brown eyes.
• Donors can bring books to the Spencer Center or give to members of the P.E.R.S.I.S.T. Scholars Program, or write a check payable to 91TV, with Black Boys Read Book Drive written in the memo. Books must be new; be written by an author of African descent; and contain illustrations of Black people.
